Optical flow is calculated from a video stream by finding the direction and rate of movement of each small area. Abrupt changes in optical flow are often found at object boundaries and can thus be used as pary of object identfication. Differences in optical flow can also help determine whether one object is moving relative to another, and when the camera itself is moving, the distance to objects using parallax.
